TEH London Marathon Runners 2006

As planned we had five runners on the start line of the 26th Flora London Marathon on 23 April 2006

Making his marathon debut this year was Edward Crookes whilst our older hands were Ian Spencer, Lindsay Scholey, Lynne Watkinson and Bill Messinger

Ian was running to raise money in memory of his late parents, Pete & Ruby Spencer. Pete Spencer set up the helping hands charity over 25 years ago to make dreams come true for seriously or terminally ill local children and to provide them with specialist equipment. Lindsay, Lynne and Bill were all raising funds for The Good Grief Appeal a charity offering relief, education & support to those who have suffered bereavement and need help in coming to terms with their loss of a partner, relation or loved friend. Edward ran for both The Good Grief Appeal and Leukaemia Research

On the day conditions favoured the runners rather than spectators as it was cool and drizzled virtually throughout which no doubt contributed to three of our runners achieving PBs. Whilst Edward’s was inevitable, Lindsay and Bill took respectively 9 and 5 minutes off their previous best times which they had achieved at London in 2004

By a very short head Edward was our first runner home in an excellent time of 3hrs 28mins 57secs - this put him just two seconds ahead of Lindsay who was herself only one second ahead of Lynne which must be some sort of record for close finishes between team mates! Whereas Lindsay and Lynne ran together from the Green Start Edward had commenced on Blue and they didn’t bump into each other until after they had all finished.
Lynne was left bewildered as to how Lindsay managed to finish one second ahead given they had run all 26.2 miles together (even crossing the finish line holding hands) she has since been advised to put the chip on her left shoe and a little nearer her toes next time
