MARATHON - THE ULTIMATE TRAINING GUIDE (BOOK)

A specialist marathon training book by Hal Higdon - senior writer, Runner’s World magazine, and author of Hal Higdon’s Smart running

Published by Runner’s World Books - ISBN: 1 - 57954 - 171 - 2

Another American book which although targeted for marathon running also addresses the training principles that apply to any distance and caters for all abilities .

Again well presented and easy to read or simply dip in for some specific guidance so a useful addition to the bookshelf of the aspiring marathoner.

If you are planning to run London get a copy. Hal Higdon also hosts a good web site - click on the book for the link.

A WOMAN’S GUIDE TO RUNNING - BEGINNER TO ELITE (BOOK)

A book written for women by a woman - Annemarie Jutel “... has been running competitively for 30 years. She is a pioneer in women’s distance running ...”

Published by The Women’s Press Ltd - ISBN: 0 - 7043 - 4722 - 9

First published in New Zealand and covers the basics from a distinctly feminine angle and beginners perspective.

Not bad but it’s not the sort of book you will want to read over again or use as a reference works.

If you are a woman who is new to running then this may be the book for you - but even then you may find it all a bit too girlie!!

DANIELS’ RUNNING FORMULA (BOOK)

“Programs and strategies: 1500 to marathon” by Jack Daniels, PhD “Coaching legend Jack Daniels gives you everything you need to put together a complete program for training and racing”.

Published by Human Kinetics - ISBN: 0 - 88011 - 735 - 4

Yet another offering from America, this book covers planning, training and racing with a focus on the technical.
It is also punctuated by many anecdotal snippets about the great runners who flourished under Daniels involvement including the likes of: Jim Ryun, Joan Benolt Samuelson, Bob Williams, Penny Werthner, Jerry Lawson, etc. which became rather tedious.

Jack Daniels may be a great coach but I don’t like his book and in hindsight should have spent the money on a bottle of a rather similar sounding alcoholic beverage!!
